Mattmark Challenge

Disappointed that the Mattmark Memorial 2024 can't take place? So are we - but only briefly! Because by taking part in the Mattmark Challenge for free, you can still put your skills to the test on large sections of the original course. Prepare yourself perfectly for next year's edition and secure the chance to win great prizes.

Note: Due to storm damage, some sections of the original routes are currently closed and not accessible. Please note the current routing of the routes on Outdooractive.

Mattmark Challenge

From Saturday, 21 September 2024, all trails of the Mattmark Memorial 1965 will be marked. Throughout the autumn season (21 September to 27 October), you can tackle the trails on your own and send in the GPS track of your run. This automatically enters you into the Mattmark Challenge. The results will be continuously updated on the online ranking and great prizes will be raffled off among all participants at the end of October.

How to participate:

  • Familiarise yourself with the route
  • To track your run, you will need a GPS watch or a GPS application on your mobile phone, such as Garmin, Suunto, Strava, Outdooractive, Komoot, etc.
  • Download the GPS data of the route of your choice to your GPS watch or mobile phone
  • Make sure you have the necessary equipment and food for the route
  • Make sure that you choose a suitable weather window for your run (precipitation, temperature, etc.)
  • Start the GPS tracking at the start in Saas-Balen (or for the lake circuit at the Mattmark dam)
  • Run the specified route and end your recording at the finish line
  • Save the GPS recording
  1. Take a proof selfie at the Mattmark dam
  2. Take a screenshot of your GPS recording showing the following data:
    • Complete GPS route of the correct route
    • Date and time of the recording
    • Duration, distance and altitude metres
  3. Submit your result here and automatically take part in the challenge

On showing your screenshot, you will receive a finisher bag at the tourist offices in Saas-Fee, Saas-Grund or Saas-Almagell.

You are guaranteed to find the right challenge on the four trails. Be it the classic lake circuit or half-marathon route, the varied Weissmies Trail or the absolute challenge on the Mischabel Trail. Information on the trails and GPX data to download can be found on the respective Outdooractive entries.

Current redirections

8K - Lake circuit 
  • The eastern shore of the Mattmark reservoir is currently closed. The lake circuit leads along the western shore to Distelalp and back the same way.
 
21K - Half marathon 
  • In Saas-Almagell, the riverside path between Webstube - Zermeiggern is closed due to construction work. At the Webstube, turn left over the bridge and run along the left side of the river to Zermeiggern.
  • The dam is currently not accessible via the original route (eastwards). Therefore, please run directly below the car route to the Mattmark restaurant. The half marathon route ends directly at the Mattmark restaurant without the lake circuit.
 
30 K - Weissmies Trail: 
  • The dam is currently not accessible on the original route (eastwards). Therefore, please run directly below the car route to the Mattmark restaurant.
 
50 K - Mischabel Trail 
  • In Saas-Almagell, the riverside path between Webstube - Zermeiggern is closed due to construction work. At the Webstube, turn left over the bridge and walk along the left side of the river to Zermeiggern.
  • The dam is currently not accessible via the original route (eastwards). Therefore, please walk directly below the car route to the Mattmark restaurant.
